Sports and Remedial massage is effective for many kinds of muscular and soft tissue problems as well as injury, whether it is due to posture, occupational stress or sporting activities.
This style of massage not only helps recovery from injury, but more importantly is very effective in the prevention of injuries. It should therefore be an integral part of a training or fitness program for all those involved in physical activity, whether you are an amateur or a professional sportsperson.
After sporting activity there is a build-up of waste material and often also micro-trauma (microscopic tears in muscle tissue) as well as slight swelling in the muscles. By using techniques like effleurage and petrissage to stimulate blood circulation, Sports and Remedial massage greatly aids the removal of waste products from the muscle tissues, and supplies these areas with increased blood and nutrients needed for tissue health and repair.
Further techniques, such as friction, mobilisation, soft tissue release (STR), muscle energy techniques (MET) and neuromuscular techniques (NMT) are applied to help mobilize joints, reduce pain and break down scar tissue and adhesions in the muscles and soft tissue, as well as to stretch and realign specific areas of damage or tangled fibres. Contracted muscles can be lengthened and areas of tightness are relaxed, helping to speed up recovery time and improve muscle performance and efficiency.
WHAT TO EXPECT
At your first appointment a case history will be taken to make sure there are no reasons why you should not receive massage, and to discuss any injuries or problems you may have. An assessment of the problem will then be done. This may involve a postural assessment so please wear appropriate underwear – sports bra or loose shorts. Mobility of the injury or problem area will also be checked when appropriate.
The treatment will usually last one hour. Most of the treatment is done with you lying on a massage table, sometimes work will be done with you seated, depending on the problem or area being massaged.
The day after a sports massage you may experience some soreness, so make sure your massage is at least 24 hours before any important sporting activities. Your modesty will be respected at all times during the treatment. And time will be left at the end to discuss any findings and follow up treatments.

It’s always hard to gauge just how firm your first deep tissue massage should be, so keep your massage therapist informed if you feel it is too much or too little.
It's important to drink a lot of water after a deep tissue massage to help flush lactic acid out of the tissues. If you don't, you’re more likely to be sore the next day.

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE ?
Myofascial release is a very gentle and slow technique which is ideal for those suffering a great deal of pain. Fascia is wrapped around everything within the body - bones, muscles, organs, everything, and it is like one giant elastic band. Its job is to protect the body by tightening up but unfortunately does not relax again, therefore it can cause pressure and specifically pain as it compresses areas within the body. The theory behind the technique is that as it reacts to protect, it must be treated slowly with little pressure to avoid stimulating the fascia further. The therapists' hands are placed on an area, typically the session is started across the shoulder blades, with soft pressure. The fascia will begin to release and as it does the therapists' hands will slowly move across the skin. The client may experience tingling or a sense of relaxation as tension eases. There is no pain experienced during this technique and as a result, it can be very beneficial to those suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic pain.

Remedial Massage tends to be deeper and much more targeted; although the long, slow and gentle strokes associated with a classic massage may be used to relax the patient and prepare the area to be worked on. So in essence, it can be uncomfortable however the therapist will continually ask throughout the treatment if you are happy with the pressure applied which can be changed if required.
Does it bruise? - continued:
When injuries occur deep in the muscle, bleeding often occurs causing deep bruises. There will also be edema in the area involving the coagulation of sticky proteins. The combining presence of these elements usually results in stagnation of circulation to the area - resulting in pain, dysfunction, and chronic conditions.
Where there is dead, static blood, lymph, cellular debris, pathogenic factors, and toxins present in the body, bruising indicates that the stagnation or disease has been moved from the deeper tissue layers to the surface.

Blood conditions that cause clotting problems, or the use of medications like blood clotting drugs or corticosteroids, can also make your skin more likely to bruise from a deep tissue massage.
If you have sensitive skin that easily bruises, or if you suffer from a disorder that leaves you susceptible to bruising, then a deep tissue massage may not be the right therapy for you.
